OK, you've heard it before ... I have a new favorite church. Here is ... the Berlin Dom.
What an amazing structure ... from all the way back to the Prussian Hohenzollern dynasty, through the trials of the Third Reich, surviving a planned demolition by East Germany, and now part of a unified Berlin.
The area outside of the Dom is open with a nice fountain ... and a lot of shysters who have a bunch of scams to try to get money out of tourists. They ask "do you speak English?" and if the answer is "yes," they shove a note asking for money for whatever in your face. There was a whole group of them parading around; some with kids in tow, etc. I started saying "nein" very quickly.
Part of this church was badly damaged in the war (surprise). Not all of it was rebuilt to pre-war design but impressive nonetheless.
The inside of the main alter area just seemed to reach upward forever. Each of the four naves had these giant mosaics of the four authors of the Gospels.
The majestic front alter.
The coolest thing about this church was the Hohenzollern family crypt in the basement. Sorry, no pictures, but if you Google it on the web and click images, you can see what we mean. Family coffins dating from the 16th century were out there for us to look at ...
