Winery Tour

Back to Wuerzburg, this time with the class for our winery tour. Buergerspital was our destination.  They have been making wines here since the 14th century!  We saw the year's first grapes arrive and get de-stemmed and crushed.  Then it was down into the wine cellars to see the aging casks, both old and new.  We were able to look into the "treasure vaults" where the old wines are stored for future generations.  It was a shame that many wines before the 1850s were destroyed in the firebombing of the city in 1945.

In the picture that has the old bottles lined up in the wall, note the fourth bottle from the right. It was made in 1540; the oldest known wine in the world.  It was one of two.  The other was opened in 1961 and reportedly was still wonderful (for the first few sips before oxygen ruined the old wine).

Being in the old cellars was very interesting to say the least.
